New Zealand: Increasing Citizen Access to Key Information

In 2016, there was no single place where New Zealanders could view all of their government’s legislation. The New Zealand Legislature’s website, legislation.govt.nz, included some legislation and regulations drafted by Parliament, but did not regularly include those drafted by government departments and agencies in a single place or in an open format.

With the knowledge that better access to information has the power to increase citizens’ trust in their government, New Zealand committed to expand the scope of legislation.govt.nz. The updated website is a user-friendly public source of all federal legislation and government agency regulations, improving the ability of citizens and businesses in New Zealand to access and understand their rights and obligations. Representatives of both civil society and government have endorsed the expansion.
